The European Continent - Quest for the best

Introduction

You have been assigned to organise a 4-day trip to Europe on the condition that it is affordable and educational. In order to study as many destinations as possible, work in groups of four or five to work out the best destination that satisfies the conditions set by the school teachers board. These conditions refer to the best European city to visit based on its history, its museums, its culture, the cost of accommodation and travelling and the easy access to and from it. All these pieces of information should be taken into consideration while planning. Your investigation is going to be followed by a Power Point presentation in which each group will support their suggested destination in order to persuade their peers. May the best presentation win!

Process

Step 1 ( 5' )

Deside on the 4 or 5 groups depending on the number of students.Do this as soon as possible so that you have plenty of time to work on the process. You should also choose the role of each member in the group. You need members to surf the Internet for information, to use Google maps, to try to stick to the budget and to decide on the events to attend. Get ready to look for the appropriate information! 

Step 2 ( 10' )

You have to plan your trip to one European City based on the following:

Duration: 4 days / 3 nights

Time of the year: any time

Departure: our local or nearest airport

Participants: 20 students and 3 teachers (you have to decide about the rooms)

Accommodation: 3* or 4* hotel

Budget: maximum 400 per person

Special needs: one student has a broken leg

Important: the plan chosen should be highly educational and all visits should be presented and evaluated

 

Now answer the following questions in order to decide about the city of your choice. Of course you can add more questions to these. Then, announce your choice to the rest of the class.

1. Do you want to practise the foreign language you learn at school?

2. Underline the adjectives that best characterise the city you would like to visit.

3. Do you want to have a short travel time?

4. How difficult is it to travel around?

5. How expensive is it to travel around?

6. What places of interest, sites etc would you like to visit?

Alternatively, you can visit the websites given at the end of the scenario in the "Step 2" text in order to find the city that suits you best.

Step 3 ( 30' ) 

Now you have decided about the city of your destination, you will be guided to visit specific web pages concerning travels (tips, hotels, tickets etc). Work with your partners based on the conditions given, discuss and combine information and construct a schedule for the 4-day trip. Do not forget to justify your choices, write down your ideas and make your choices match the requirements!

In order to make your decisions, there are some websites you can visit along with the Google Maps link in the "Step 3" interactive text at the end of the scenario.
