POEM AND ACTIVITIES
1. We suggest two ways of introducing Wordsworth’s poem to the students. Either we give all the lines at random order, so that the students in groups arrange them in the correct sequence to construct the poem; or we provide each group with the words/phrases of the poem at a random list and we ask them to use the mixed words to compose a poem. Then, we distribute the complete poem. This is a simple, brief poem with uncomplicated vocabulary. The only words we may need to pre-teach by explaining them in English will probably be: “behold” (see), “leap” (jump), bound (connect) and “piety” (holiness). After the students read the actual poem, they work in groups to decide on a suitable title for it.
2. Students create a mind map with the word rainbow in the centre or with their favourite colour in the centre and they can share what they have written with the rest of the class.
3. We provide students with several options for creative writing practice. They can choose to carry out individually at least one or more of the following creative activities: a) Write a poem or story entitled “the rainbow”. b) Write a poem about your favourite colour. c) Write a poem inspired by the colours of sunrise and sunset. d) Write 10 colours and 10 different concepts or objects associated with these colours. Then, use some or if possible all of these word connotations to create a poem or a short story.
